The Green vote doubled, leading to the end of the Liberal Democrat administration in Sheffield. There is now no overall control on the Council. Leading Labour spokesperson Veronica Hardstaff has admitted that a Labour Administration will have to re think the Planning Application for the new incinerator as she admits it is too big and will stop initiatives for recycling. The Greens beat the Tories in Castle, Heeley, Nether Edge, Netherthorpe, Sharrow and Walkley so we are clearly now a major force in Sheffield politics and we can now expect equal coverage with the Conservatives in future elections. Our best ever result of 16.8% in Netherthorpe makes Green Party Chairperson Bernard Little look electable at the next election. Our excellent performance led to Lib Dem losses in Heeley, Walkley, Hillsborough, Intake and Norton so the Lib Dems have now lost control of the Council.

We beat the Tories in Heeley, Netherthorpe, Sharrow and Walkley and were only 20 votes behind them in Nether Edge. We beat the Socialist Alliance in Burngreave and Castle. In Netherthorpe we gained a brilliant 10.3% of the vote and we also gained more than 7% of the vote in Broomhill, Heeley, Nether Edge and Sharrow. These results firmly establish the Green Party as the 4th Party in Sheffield. In 2002 we expect to overtake the Tories in more wards and challenge for second place in our best wards.
