Candidate for Darnall
I have worked as a
GP in Sheffield since moving here 4 years ago. I
previously worked in Scotland, Australia and the Midlands. This
is my
ninth time standing for election for the Green Party. I live in
Sharrow and currently work in Meersbrook. I worked at a surgery
in Tinsley for 3 years
and have been involved in Tinsley Environment Forum.
I try to live a low impact life. I don't have
a car, and mostly travel by bike. I prefer to holiday in this
country, which, in addition to avoiding flying, is also good for
the British economy. I buy electricity from renewable sources.
I think hard before making any purchase and buy second hand or
recycled goods wherever possible.
Darnall and Tinsley, are blighted, like many
areas with high levels of
deprivation, with high levels of pollution and poor air quality.
This leads to even poorer health in communities where rates of
illnesses such as diabetes and heart disease are already prevalent.
There have been cuts to vital bus routes, and little encouragement
of walking and cycling, which has forced more people into cars,
making traffic and congestion worse, but also leading to rises
in the levels of obesity.
We need decent public transport, which
in addition to environmental and health benefits, would also allow
more people the opportunity to get around for leisure, socialising,
working or studying. I have been campaigning against the widening
of the M1. The billions of pounds saved by not adding an extra
lane of traffic onto the motorway could really transform our public
transport system and encourage people to get active by walking
and cycling.
