Candidate for Nether Edge

I have lived in Nether Edge for over 20 years. I am married with 2 children and retired after working for the council and the NHS. I have been the Green Party candidate in Nether Edge since 1999, increasing my vote in every election.

I am an active member of Sheffield Green Party’s Energy Group, working on policy and energy advice. I served on the Nether Edge Neighbourhood Group’s Planning Sub Committee for many years. I am increasingly concerned about the number of flats built in the ward and their poor building standards.

I am proud of the measures that Green councillors have got into the council budget for 2008/9. They will make a real difference on energy conservation and greatly increase the chances of getting much needed crossings on Psalter Lane and at the junction of Carterknowle and Bannerdale roads

Better housing and lower energy bills

The Green Party believes everyone has the right to adequate housing which should be affordable, safe, warm and dry.

We want housing that is more affordable to heat, better regulation of private landlords and a fairer allocation of social housing. We will invest in better insulation and green energy. This will create jobs and boost the local economy as well as combating climate change and improving energy security.

Our budget measure to fund insulation support for private and council homes will reduce energy consumption and fuel bills.

We will push for affordable housing quotas to be enforced in future developments at the Hallam University campus on Psalter Lane and the Brincliffe Oaks pub site.

Better Transport

The Green Party believes that reducing traffic is the only long term solution to traffic jams, air pollution and accidents. We've fought to protect local services, such as schools and post offices, that reduce our need to travel and campaigned for better railways, trams, buses, pedestrian facilities and cycle routes.

The Green Party wants to re introduce bus regulation and re open local railway stations such as Heeley and Millhouses and install pedestrian crossings. We are concerned that First are running down the 22 bus service to Nether Edge Hospital in favour of more profitable routes. We must also protect the 3 & 4 buses, a vital link for many elderly people on Psalter Lane.

Less Waste

The Green Party believes our 'throwaway' is a huge waste of resources and energy. Council's private waste contract is based burning rubbish in an incinerator and has poor recycling rates. We want our waste reduced, reused and recycled as much as possible.

We are pushing for a Regional Strategy that minimises landfill and incineration, encourages recycling and moves zero waste in the long term. The council must work harder to identify new sites for recycling bring banks in central Nether Edge.

The Green Party believes the success of a city or nation should not be measured simply on its economic growth. Big business often sucks money out of a local economy and invests profits elsewhere.

Small businesses are usually more responsive to customers and their profits stay in the local economy.

We support the new Farmers Market on Nether Edge Road which will encourage people to shop locally, protecting and complementing our vital shopping parades.
