Candidate for Beauchief & Greenhill

David is a former Labour councillor for the Heeley ward and co-chair of Sheffield Green Party. David suppliies expert planning knowledge, gained during his time as a councillor, to the party.

David is strongly against the St Lukes proposals for Graves Park and has been liaising with the Friends group on behalf of the party. The following policy was agreed at a general meeting on the Sheffield Green Party on the 19th February 2008 :

  1. Mindful of its manifesto commitments to support open spaces and parks, opposes any new development at the Norton Nurseries or other sites within Graves Park.
  2. Requests that the Council offer all assistance to St Luke's Hospice in seeking alternative sites.
  3. Calls upon its members to support Friends of Graves Park campaign against any new development within Graves Park.

The things which are guiding the Green Party at the moment are:

  • Clear indication from Green Party members that the principle of retaining park land is paramount - The Green Party believe strongly in protecting green spaces.
  • Very strong public opinion, not just from people who live near the park, saying the same thing.
  • Value of the Norton Nursery, no one has so far suggested a viable alternative site and it would be very wasteful to demolish and rebuild. We may need it more in the future as we try to grow more food locally.
  • Doubts that a single, state of the art, centre on the south side of the city is the best way to serve the needs of all those who need inpatient (or home based) terminal care
