Our public transport
systems used to be among the best in the world. Now they're at
breaking point. For decades governments have siphoned away money
earmarked for essential investment - and now we're paying the
price - not just in wasted time but also in lost lives.
Next time you sit in a traffic jam ask yourself
if we're on the right road. The Green Party wants to get Britain
moving again.
We know that more roads simply mean more car
traffic. Re-allocate just a quarter of the road budget and in
ten years we could build light rail systems in eight cities, create
10,000 people-friendly home zones, put £4 billion into cutting
train and bus fares, £1 billion into rural transport and
another billion into transport for disabled people. Add to that
safe routes to all our schools and colleges and tens of thousands
of new jobs and it's money well spent.
We also know that most journeys are local ones,
and that walking and cycling should be a pleasant experience that
everyone can enjoy, without having to risk life and limb.
Real Progress means making public transport
an easy option.
Deputy Mayor of London, the Green Party's
Jenny Jones AM has promoted Road Safety as a member of the Metropolitan
Police Authority. The Greens on London's Assembly have supported
the successful congestion charge. In Europe, British Green MEPs
have made Real Progress in pushing for cuts in aircraft noise
and for airlines to pay for damaging the environment. The Greens
have also pushed for train travel to always be a cheaper option
than flying, and for the re-nationalistion of Britain's railways
and re-regulation of our buses.
