Comment on Wicker Tesco
2nd January 2008
Jillian Creasy, Green Party Cllr for Central
ward, which includes the city centre, said: "Once again,
we are being told that a large new supermarket will create jobs
and help regeneration. In fact jobs will be lost from existing
small shops as Tesco destroys them by undercutting their "staple"
lines. According to the Planning Department's own analysis, 9%
of the superstore's trade will come from the City Centre. If shops
close there, residents will be forced to travel further. This
is not good for regeneration, local communities or the environment."
