Transport

There are too many cars on Sheffield's roads, causing congestion, pollution and stress. The Council's traffic management policies - road widening and traffic light systems - only make the problem worse.

Building more roads, car parks and airports is expensive for the taxpayer, damages the environment and actually produces more traffic. Encouraging people to drive less helps fight climate change and reduces local air pollution. We need safe, cheap and convenient alternatives to the car. Public transport currently is expensive, confusing and unreliable, and alternatives are underfunded and given low priority.

What is the Green Party doing?

  • Pressing the Council for better pedestrian facilities.
  • Campaigning for regulated bus services with public control of fares, routes and frequencies.
  • Campaigning for an integrated public transport system.
  • Pushing for improvements to rail infrastructure and services.
  • Opposing road widening schemes both inside the city and on major routes such as the M1 and Mottram/Tintwistle bypass.
  • Promoting city cycling and resisting budget cuts for cycle training.
  • Helping secure residents' parking schemes and supporting 'car clubs' .
  • Campaigning for better travel planning and information for commuters and leisure travellers
