Economy

We want to transform Sheffield's economy form a "consumer" to a "conserver" economy which focuses on people's quality of life, social justice and environmental sustainability. Instead of "inward investment" from big businesses whose profits and jobs often move out of the city, we want investment in the industries and enterprises we will need in the future. We need sustainable development in existing sectors, such as engineering, housing and transport, and in newer sectors like energy conservation, together with investment in the necessary skills and training. Individual businesses and organisations, and Sheffield's whole economy, should be properly accountable to local people, with public sector organisations not being handed over to proviate ownership .
What is the Green Party doing?

  • Supporting local shops and post offices, and community facilities.
  • Opposing developments, such as the Super Casino and the New Retail Quarter, that are not in the interest of small local businesses.
  • Campaigning for wind turbines to be made in Sheffield using local expertise.
  • Pushing for regeneration money to be invested in sustainable local development.
  • Getting the Council to create a new post to help small businesses damaged by rapid development in the city centre.
  • Pressing the Council and other local institutions to buy local goods and services.
  • Pressing for employment, skills and training policies that meet the needs of Sheffield's economy and its people.
