Welcoming Diversity and Promoting Equality
Just as bio-diversity is good for our planet,
human diversity is good for
communities. We can take practical steps to ensure that everyone
can take
part in all aspects of community life. This means encouraging better
understanding of the differences between people, and finding better
ways of resolving conflicts.
Promoting equality means working to make sure
that people do not suffer violence, harassment or discrimination
because of their race, nationality, gender, disability, age, sexuality
or religious beliefs. Laws protecting these important rights must
be upheld.
In Sheffield
Sheffield is generally a tolerant city which
has welcomed immigrants and
asylum seekers over many years. This atmosphere is threatened by
national government waging its so called "war on terror"
and spreading the myth that there is a "refugee crisis"
and that asylum seekers are "bogus". The good work done
by the City Council, community, faith and voluntary groups and ordinary
people in their communities is at risk.
The Green Party has:
- Explained that refugees
are the result of wars and environmental catastrophe and made
the link between the 7/7 atrocities and UK foreign policy Supported
refugee and asylum groups such as the Conversation Club., ASSIST
and REACT.
- Opposed the culture of blame and fear promoted
by government and media through the so-called refugee crisis
and 'war on terror'.
- Been active in the Women's Forum and the Domestic
Abuse Forum.
- Continued to work with the voluntary sector,
community groups and other agencies to promote good community
relations, better understanding and an end to discrimination
Our local Green Party members will:
- Support the campaign to provide free English
language tuition for asylum seekers.
Our Green Councillors have:
- Worked to make Council buildings, services
and consultation forums fully accessible to people with disabilities
Our Green Councillors will:
- Continue to support multicultural and interfaith
activities.
