Community Safety, Crime Prevention and
Justice
In spite of Governments efforts at crime
control, there is more surveillance
and yet more fear than ever. The poorest half of the UK owns just
6% of its
wealth. Ethnic minority peoples are more likely to be victims of
crime and
also more likely to be put in prison than white people. We must
deal with the social causes of crime. Policies on crime should go
together with those on education, social care, health, economics
and housing. Some who commit offences need supervision. But we want
society to prevent crime, not just punish it: where offenders make
reparation the victims and the police are fully accountable to the
people they serve.
In Sheffield
Around one third of Sheffield's 28 wards are
within the most deprived 10% in England and two wards are within
the least deprived 5%. Sheffield is one of the most unequal cities
in Britain with a much higher burglary rate than the national average.
Hundreds of people in South Yorkshire have been served with ASBOs
These are not effective and do not address the underlying causes
of anti-social behaviour.
We need a properly funded community and youth
services and support for
people with mental health, drug and alcohol or other social problems.
In the
city centre, '24 hour' licensing and the growth of bars and flats
have increased noise nuisance. As part of its response, the Council
has imposed an alcohol exclusion zone in the city centre which is
likely to move street drinkers on to areas where they will have
no support.
The Green Party has:
- Actively supported
the provision of better youth/sports facilities in Mount Pleasant,
Broomhall, and Meersbrook.
- Done much casework around noise nuisance and
litter, particularly in Central Ward.
- Supported campaigns and organised petitions
to improve road safety.
- Encouraged community safety by organising
local clear ups to encourage use of green spaces.
Our local Green Party members will:
- Continue to support
local litter picks and clear ups.
- Support youth justice initiatives and better
facilities for young people.
Our Green Councillors have:
- Initiated a scrutiny
exercise on noise nuisance.
- Worked on the alcohol exclusion zone issue
to develop alternatives such as a wet garden tolerance
zone for street drinkers.
- Liaised with the two Universities about the
anti-social behaviour of students.
Our Green Councillors will:
- Contribute to recommendations
on a noise nuisance strategy particularly.
- Further support the appointment and deployment
of more community support officers (CSOs) to ensure more police
foot patrols in areas of high crime and neighbourhood nuisance.
- Encourage more people to become involved in
voluntary and community work, especially those at risk of social
exclusion.
- Argue for the appointment of more police officers,
CSOs and JPs from ethnic minorities.
- Support groups doing preventive work e.g.
Neighbourhood Watch, support for victims of domestic violence
and racial harassment, out of school activities, citizenship education
initiatives, and mediation.
- Continue to help victims of anti-social behaviour
