Just as bio-diversity is good for our planet, human diversity is
good for communities. We can take practical steps can ensure that
everyone participates fully in all aspects of community life. This
means promoting better understanding of difference, and finding
better ways of resolving differences.

Promoting equality means working
to make sure that people do not suffer violence, harassment or discrimination
because of their race, nationality, gender, disability, age, sexuality
or religious beliefs. Laws protecting these important rights must
be upheld.
In Sheffield
Sheffield is generally a tolerant
city which has welcomed immigrants and asylum seekers over many
years. This atmosphere is threatened by national government waging
its so called "war on terror" and spreading the myth that
there is a "refugee crisis" and that asylum seekers are
"bogus". The good work done by the City Council, community,
faith and voluntary groups and ordinary people in their communities
is at risk.
What we have done so far:
- Explained that refugees are the result of
wars and environmental catastrophe and made the link between the
7/7 atrocities and UK foreign policy.
- Made links with refugee and asylum groups
such as the Conversation Club and ASSIST. Supported the Guantanamo
Human Rights campaign (vigils, public meetings, multicultural
fund raisers).
- Supported the Kashmir Earthquake disaster
appeal in the Council and local community.
- Brought motions to Council about Fallujah
and the plight of failed asylum seekers.
- Opposed the culture of blame and fear promoted
by government and media through the so-called refugee crisis
and 'war on terror'.
- Supported Sheffield Unite Against Fascism.
- Been active in the Women's Forum and the Domestic
Abuse Forum.
- Welcomed launch of Civil Partnerships at the
Register Office.
