...Animal Rights

As anyone with a pet knows, animals can suffer and have feelings. They are intelligent in their own way, and need the right environment to have a happy and healthy life. The same applies to animals in farms and in the wild.

The Green Party is the only party that is truly committed to stopping cruelty to animals, even if it involves challenging big business. The Labour Party has broken its promises - animals are still being hunted and experimented on. Millions were slaughtered instead of vaccinated in the foot-and–mouth disaster.

A staggering 750 thousand million animals are killed for food every year in the UK.

In Sheffield

Animals are suffering and dying in experiments at Sheffield University. Green Party members have helped expose these practices. We campaign to preserve and improve our green spaces, which can be a haven for wildlife even in the inner city. We also campaign on food and farming issues.. BSE and food poisoning show that factory farming is unhealthy as well as intensely cruel to animals.

As Green City Councillors we will:

  • Press for the appointment of an Animal Protection Officer to promote animal rights when they are threatened. Green councillors in London have pioneered this approach
  • Work to establish an affordable animal neutering service in the city and encourage people to adopt pets from local shelters rather than use dealers.
  • Expose institutions carrying out vivisection and testing on animals including Sheffield University. Publicise research showing that the results of animal tests often don't apply to humans in any case. Make links with our counterparts in the European parliament who are working on legislation.
  • Request that the Council buys cruelty-free cleaning materials and other products.
  • Support the tough enforcement of laws on animal transportation and slaughtering in Sheffield.
  • Promote organic, vegetarian and vegan food so that people can make informed choices.
  • Oppose developments that threaten our green spaces and vital habitats for animals.
  • Oppose cruel and lethal forms of controlling animal populations, and encourage the use of humane methods instead.
