Parks Amendment
5th February 2008
Green Party councillor
Bernard Little says....
There is no way that Sheffield can be
called the UK's Greenest City just because of the extent of our
existing tree cover and public parks. Last October's 'Sustainable
Cities' report by Forum for the Future ranked Sheffield 7th overall
out of the UK's 20 largest cities according to their environmental
impact, quality of life and future proofing. The report said that
cities we still have a very long way to go on the journey to sustainability
because our environmental footprint is very high.
Local green spaces, no matter how small,
play an important role
especially in densely populated inner cities and they need investment.
They are key in supporting biodiversity, mitigating
climate change,
preventing flooding and for urban food production as well as for
the
enjoyment of residents as well as a selling point for the city.
