Setting the Carbon Targets
11th April 2007
Dear Editor,
There is a big, big, difference between setting
a carbon target for Council activity and for the City as a whole
(Council Sets Target on Carbon Emissions and Editorial, Star,
7th April). The point the Green Party have been making is that
Sheffield City Council ought to be setting a target for the whole
city and leading on how to achieve it. The first step is to adopt
an agreed carbon footprint, which would show how much carbon is
used for each activity - heating our homes, transport, industry,
consumables and so on. Only then can the council decide on policies
to reduce the city's greenhouse gas emissions. Until they do this,
they cannot claim to be leading on the issue.
Yours sincerely
