No need to mourn the loss of the Airport
16th Januar y 2007
Dear Sir
Letter writers V Malone
and Andrew Wallis ("modern city like Sheffield needs an airport
to survive" The Star January 13th) say that those who reject
an Airport in Sheffield are foolish and will make the city the
laughing stock of the world.
What is more foolish? To ignore the fact that
the airline industry is the fastest growing contributor to climate
change and continue to base the survival of our economy on rapidly
depleting fossil fuels? Or take the global emergency of climate
change and looming fossil fuel scarcity seriously by investing
in a more self-reliant regional economy where the need to transport
goods, that could be made on our doorstep, is no longer necessary?
Which one of these options is going to ensure
Sheffield is a city with a secure future?
