you join the Green Party :
In Sheffield, we make up for a decentralised part of the national
Green Party and aim to create a just, equitable and sustainable
local community in Sheffield. We focus our efforts primarily, though
not exclusively, through the electoral system.
If you aren't sure what the Green Party is about, then it would
be worth while reading our FAQ
page which answers the frequently asked questions. You may also
wish to read the issues and policy pages to find out a little more
about us. Here, you will find that greens share a vision of community-based
politics, social justice, non-violence, and a sustainable future.
Real Progress and Gaining Recognition
Jillian Creasy
was elected as the first Green Party councillor on Sheffield City
Council in Central ward in June 2004. This followed a sustained
increase in our share of the vote in council elections over the
previous 5 years. Bernard
Little almost doubled his vote in Central constituency in the
2005 General Election. In the 2006 council elections he joined Jillian
Creasy as the second councillor in the Central Ward and Jillian
was re-elected in 2007. This has meant that the Green Party in Sheffield
are now seen as a recognised political party who are able to make
an influence in developing local policy.
Real Progress across the UK
The UK's Green Party now has more elected representatives in more
influential positions than ever before. There are 2 Members of the
European Parliament, 2 members of the Scottish Parliament and 2
London Assembly members. 92 Greens sit on 37 different Principal
Authority Councils - including Districts, English Counties, Metropolitan
and London Boroughs and are part of the ruling administration on
five of them. In addition there is a Green Party representative
in the House of Lords.
Real Progress at Meetings
We meet monthly on alternate Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 8 to
10pm in a room at The Circle, 33 Rockingham Lane, Sheffield, S1
4FW. The building is immediately behind the (now closed) Fopp music
store on Division Street and easily identified by the illuminated
circular artwork and banner to the front of the building. The building
has disabled access and 3 parking bays. It is close to West St tram
stop and on the 51,52 and 60 bus routes. Parking has to be in nearby
pay and displays and there is a bike stand. Potential new members
are very welcome to attend.
